A small weekend trip onto an island in Lake Ontario. The island is the winter home of Snowy Owls, and Short Eared Owls. Other sightings this weekend were Saw Whet Owls and Barred. The island also has a lot of Red Tailed hawks, Goshawks, and Rough Legged Hawks.
Finally a sunny day. A quick visit to the Fletcher Wildlife Garden found the barred owl and an acrobatic squirrel. Then before the sun went down a quick return to Kanata to get the snowy owls before the sun set.
At the Fletcher Wildlife Garden there had been sightings of a barred owl. I found it in a tree on the far side of a ravine. After taking a few pictures some fighting squirrels spooked it and it flew into a tree about 12 feet from me. Very rare treat.
Every year in the fields of Southern Kanata the snowy owls return. There are usually 5 or so females and one or two males. They start arriving a little bit before Christmas, but this year a single female is a welcome early arrival.
